Taylor Swift Urges to Senator Lamar Alexander to Support Equality Act With Open Letter
Taylor Swift has taken her politics to social media once again.
On June 1, she tweeted an open letter to Republican Lamar Alexander, in which she asks the veteran Tennessee Senator to vote for the Equality Act — legislation protecting LGBQT+ folk from unlawful discrimination against sexual orientation and/or gender identity within the workplace.
The House passed the bill in May, leaving it up to the Senate, which includes Lamar, on whether it will it make its way to President Trump.
In a statement, Swift said: “I’ve decided to kick off Pride Month by writing a letter to one of my senators to explain how strongly I feel that the Equality Act should be passed,” and later urged her fans to follow in her footsteps. “The fact that, legally, some people are completely at the mercy of the hatred and bigotry of others is disgusting and unacceptable.” She’s even started a petition in support of the bill, which has accrued nearly 100,000 signatures.
Within the past few years, Swift has made her political views increasingly public. In October of 2018, she took to Instagram to endorse Democratic candidates Phil Bredesen and Jim Cooper in the midterm elections.
Swift explained her reasoning, saying, “In the past I’ve been reluctant to publicly voice my political opinions, but due to several events in my life and in the world in the past two years, I feel very differently about that now. I always have and always will cast my vote based on which candidate will protect and fight for the human rights I believe we all deserve in this country. I believe in the fight for LGBTQ rights, and that any form of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender is WRONG.”
