17 Dead in Shooting at Florida High School, Former Student in Custody
A former student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla opened fire in the school shortly after 2pm this afternoon, adding another chapter to the increasingly horrifying story of American mass shootings.
Broward Sheriff Scott Israel said 17 people are dead, according to ABC7 Miami.
Multiple sources have identified the gunman as 19-year-old former student Nikolas Cruz, who was known to officials as someone who had made threats in the past. One Stoneman teacher told the Miami Herald that he understood that officials were aware of Cruz and that he was not allowed to be on campus with a backpack.

Israel said 17 people were killed, including both students and adults, with two killed outside the school, one in the street, 12 inside the school and two dying from their wounds at the hospital.
Investigators have begun analyzing Cruz’s social media accounts, which the sheriff said contained material that was “very, very disturbing.”
NBC News is reporting that officials believe the gunman had one AR-15 style semi-automatic rifle.
“It’s a horrific situation. It’s just a horrible day for us,” Broward County Public Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie said. “…This is a day we prayed would never happen in our county.”
The Associated Press reported the school had just over 3,100 students in 2016-17 academic year.

Today, close to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School’s dismissal, students and staff heard what sounded like gunfire. The school immediately went on lockdown but is now dismissing students. We are receiving reports of possible multiple injuries. Law enforcement is on site.
