Embedded Rings: A Trend Too Far?

You might need to consult a physician before partaking in this new engagement trend.

Wedding trends have changed drastically over the past few decades, and along with these changes came different engagement ring trends.  The newest fad, however, promises a flare with much more permanence: embedding a diamond into the ring finger, skipping the band altogether.

The diamond is placed on the finger via piercing, anchored just below the skin. The procedure itself requires only ten minutes of the bride-to-be’s time, and of course, someone willing to do the piercing. No jeweler, no appraiser, just a quick stop at a tattoo parlor.

Pros of this trend: it’s far cheaper than the more traditional variety—purchase the diamond, then pay $100 to have it embedded. However, like any piercing, there are a certain number of factors in consideration, not the least of which is bodily health.

First, the site of the embedded diamond has to be cleaned regularly and, unlike a ring, takes at least 20 weeks to fully heal.  There is also no guarantee that the body will ever completely “accept” the piercing, potentially leading to infection or scarring.

Maybe most importantly, it’s a pain to remove–literally and figuratively—so think very, very carefully before putting this “ring” on your finger.
