Cynthia Nixon Announces Entry Into Race for New York Governor
Actress Cynthia Nixon announced on March 19 that she will be running in the 2018 election for New York governor.
The New York native, best known for her role as Miranda Hobbes in the hit series “Sex and the City,” initially unveiled her candidacy on her Twitter account. The tweet included a two-minute video followed by a link to her campaign website.

Throughout the video, Nixon states how important the state of New York is to her and how there are changes that need to be made.
“New York is my home,” Nixon says. “I’ve never lived anywhere else … New York is where I was raised and where I’m raising my kids. I’m a proud public school graduate and a prouder public school parent. I was given chances I just don’t see for most of New York’s kids today.”
“Our leaders are letting us down. We are now the most unequal state in the entire country with both incredible wealth and extreme poverty. Half of the kids in our upstate cities live below the poverty line. How did we let this happen?”
Nixon has been politically vocal and a strong activist. After receiving “Best Featured Actress” award for her role in the play “The Little Foxes” at the 2017 Tony Awards, Nixon referred to a quote by Lillian Hellman to address the political state of the country:
“It is a privilege to appear in Lillian Hellman’s eerily prescient play, at this specific moment in history,” Nixon said. “Eighty years ago, she wrote, ‘There are people who eat the earth and eat all the people on it, and other people who just stand around and watch them do it.’ My love, my gratitude and my undying respect go out to all the people in 2017 who are refusing to just stand and watch them do it. Thank you.”
If Nixon wins the election, she will be both the first female governor and the first openly gay governor of New York. Visit CynthiaNixonforNY.com for more information on Nixon’s plans for her campaign.
