Syracuse University’s (Former) Theta Tau Chapter Sues University

After videos surfaced of five Syracuse University students after a video was posted of one of their events where fraternity members were filmed shouting racist slurs, promoting white supremacy, and mocking sexual assault of disabled people. As a result, Syracuse University permanently expelled the Syracuse University Chapter of Theta Tau. This was a change from the initial suspension of the chapter.

After watching, it is commendable that the University was so swift to act, and acted appropriately. Additionally, Syverud noting that words are not enough and action is needed is especially important. Often times incidents like these are followed up with a statement and minimal actions. In addition to the disciplinary action of this one fraternity, Syracuse University is doing a full investigation of their Greek Life.

However, five members of the fraternity (who filed a suit anonymously) believe that this punishment is too severe and have since filed a lawsuit against the university. However, this did not last long as the attorney representing them rescinded their request for preliminary injunction. However, this does not mean an end to their federal suit. Additionally, the Theta Tau members withdrew their request to finish the remainder of the semester.
