John Kerry’s Bid to Save the Iran Nuclear Deal
Former Secretary of State John Kerry has engaged in covert meetings with world leaders and officials, over the past several months, in an attempt to salvage the Iran nuclear deal, one of his most prominent negotiations, ahead of its May 12 renewal deadline.
According to The Boston Globe’s report on Friday, Kerry has been aggressively arranging diplomatic conferences with numerous foreign government officials, including Iran Foreign Minister Javad Zarif, French President Emmanuel Macron, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, to brainstorm probable means of preserving the deal.
At the same time, Kerry and his allies have been discreetly lobbying members of Congress, including House Speaker Paul Ryan, as they believe that “high-profile defense of the deal by prominent Democrats” would be counterproductive and would instead convince President Trump to withdraw the United States from the deal, as reported by The Boston Globe.
Neither the White House nor Kerry has responded to the Globe’s request for a comment.
