Angela Ponce will be Miss Universe’s First Transgender Contestant

On Friday, Angela Ponce was crowned Miss Universe Spain 2018, making her the first transgender woman to win the title. Her win grants her a place in the Miss Universe contest, which will be held in The Philippines in December 2018.

“Bringing the name and colors of Spain before the universe is my great dream,” wrote Ponce in Spanish shortly after her win. “My goal is to be a spokesperson for a message of inclusion, respect and diversity not only for the LGBTQ+ community, but also for the entire world.”

Ponce previously represented Cadiz in the Miss World Spain contest in 2015, but lost to Miss Barcelona, Mireia Lalaguna.

The Miss Universe organization ended its ban on transgender contestants just six years ago, after Canadian model, Jenna Talackova, successfully sued Miss Universe Canada organizers for initially disqualifying her for being transgender.

After her win, the 26-year-old model shared on twitter, “There is no goal impossible to achieve. There is no dream impossible to fulfill. It only depends on our realities.”
