Ariana Grande’s ‘7 Rings’ Tops the Charts for the Second Week in a Row
Ariana Grande’s musical reign shows no signs of slowing down. Her latest single “7 Rings” debuted at the top spot on the Billboard charts and stayed there in the most recent edition.
This track uses a familiar tune heard in the Sound of Music, creating an updated version of “My Favorite Things.” Grande has swapped out versus like, “Raindrops on roses/And whiskers on kittens/Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens,” into “Breakfast at Tiffany’s and bottles of bubbles/Girls with tattoos who like getting in trouble.”
Some observers have suggested that the catchy “I want it, I got it” lyrics are also very reminiscent of Princess Nokia’s 2017 track “Mine.” New York native Nokia wasted no time in pointing out those similarities to her own lyrics, “It’s mine/I bought it,” upon hearing the new single.
Both Grande and Nokia could actually be criticized for copying 2 Chainz “It’s mine, I spend it,” phrase in his 2011 track “Spend It.” Fans have pointed out that the “7 Rings” video also bears a resemblance to the “Spend It” clip.
In true diva fashion, Grande released a remix for “7 Rings” featuring 2 Chainz. In this take 2 Chainz clarifies, “My ideas are priceless/I know I’m the nicest,” adding “I knew you would like this/I must be psychic/I’m from the streets, baby, I’m nothin’ like them.”
Grande’s latest album, Thank U, Next, drops this Friday, and it will be a treat to see who else “inspired” this album. And how fast it goes it #1.
