Tennessee College Student Dies During Annual Boxing Tournament

Ace Miller Memorial Boxing Tournament director Tracy Miller Davis broadcasted the organization’s decision to cancel its Saturday competition in light of Tanner Wray’s passing.

Wray, a 20-year-old aerospace engineering major at University of Tennessee, collapsed in the midst of the 38th Annual Ace Miller Memorial Boxing Tournament Friday evening. Wray, the Vice President of Chi Phi fraternity’s Phi Delta Chapter, was said to have competed in Friday evening’s junior light heavyweight division match-ups behalf of his fraternity.

Both police and eyewitness statements confirm that Wray received immediate medical attention from trained personnel. After several minutes of unresponsiveness, Wray was rushed to the university’s hospital where he was declared dead upon arrival.

As the night’s events came to an early end, attendees were ushered back to the campus where a vigil was held for Wray.

Wray’s mother, Amy Long Schisler, expressed her grief on Facebook, requesting close friends and relatives for “prayers to keep me strong as I lay my son to rest in the coming days.”

Upon the announcement of Wray’s passing, Chi Phi fraternity released a press statement Saturday to send the organization’s condolences to Wray’s loved ones, Phi Delta Chapter’s members and the campus community for their loss. Wray’s fellow Chi Phi fraternity members and the university’s Greek community gathered outside the fraternity’s lodgings to mourn Wray’s passing on Saturday morning.

An autopsy of Wray will be performed over the next few days to verify his cause of death.

Boxing Weekend is an annual three-day benefit event in February organized by Ace Miller Memorial Boxing Tournament, which is unaffiliated to the University of Tennessee, for Knoxville’s novice fraternity boxers to raise funds for Golden Gloves’ Knoxville Chapter.
