Connected to a Song: Latice Crawford – ‘Choose Me’

When I think about music, there are so many songs that have impacted my life. If I have to choose one song that I have a deep connection with, I would pick “Choose Me” by Latice Crawford. I first heard this song in 2016 when Crawford was promoting her EP, Diary of a Church Girl via Instagram.

Crawford’s raspy, intricate, and soulful voice always captivates my heart, but especially on this track. When she sings, there is a pure, heartfelt message that she delivers. Not to mention, the beautiful humming, perfect vocal runs, and candid lyrics.

Crawford’s three-octave, contralto vocal range paints pictures, evokes emotions, and takes people on a journey to find themselves. She fulfills all of these categories by being truthful and transparent, while telling a story.

Each lyric is so personal, yet powerful all at the same time. She belts out these words, “Choose me/Use me/I know on the outside I don’t look like much but with your touch I’ll be better if you choose me.”

Every time I listen to this track, I place myself within the lyrics. I can envision God calling my name and just accepting me for who I am, regardless of the circumstances. I begin to think about my own life, how far I have come, and where I want to go.

There is one specific part in the song where I am just amazed and blown away by God’s actions. She sings, “Moses lacked eloquent speech but you still chose him/David tended sheep but he slayed a giant/Because of you Joseph went from the pit into a grand palace/You use the less qualified to show your greatness/So here I am.”

Crawford displays how each of these men were not perfect, but God still welcomes them with open arms. Although God might not agree with every choice I make, He continues to show me unconditional love. I feel that is the best feeling in the world because He cherishes me for who I am. I feel I never have to worry or question God’s love for me.

I love how Crawford writes these lyrics and uses her own personal experiences as inspiration in hopes of encouraging, uplifting, and motivating others.

I have been a fan of Crawford’s ever since she was a contestant on BET’s Sunday Best. With every performance, she graces the stage with a sincere presence. She commands with her strong voice, elegance, confidence, and radiant smile. She digs deep down from the depths of her soul to give people a powerful message.

She often reassures me that I am not alone on this journey, God is always with me. It is always a wonderful feeling to know that someone is supporting or rooting for you. She also wants people to know that God accepts them for who they are, despite their flaws and mistakes. I do not feel singled out, but embraced and loved.

I have such a strong connection to this song for so many reasons. First, I feel that God handpicked me to be here, to fulfill a specific assignment on earth. I have a purpose. I am strong. I would not be where I am today if it were not for God’s grace.

Second, sometimes there are moments in life where I have doubts or lack confidence, but this song reminds me that I am good enough. I am capable of accomplishing all of my dreams and aspirations. Despite the obstacles that I face, I must continue to preserve because God has a plan for my life. Whenever I feel like giving up, this song gives me the strength to keep going.

Third, I feel Crawford speaking to me through this song. She gives me a message. I can hear her saying (literally) “Jennifer, you might have Cerebral Palsy, but God selected you.” There is a specific reason why and you will achieve much success. Obstacles will try to hinder you, but you must knock down those barriers in order to be successful.

Crawford reminds me that God only wants the best for me. I know that God is by my side and holding my hand every step of the way.

This track is important to me because of its message. God did not have to choose me, but He did. I am forever grateful for what God has done in my life. I never take it for granted. I want others to know that they all have a purpose in life.
