St. Cloud Student is First Woman To Win College Sportscaster of The Year Award

Last week, Katie Emmer of St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minnesota receive the first woman to receive the Jim Nantz Award as the College Sportscaster of the Year.

“Emmer was chosen by a panel of judges selected by the Sportscasters Talent Agency of America. She will receive the honor during the National Sports Media Association convention June 23-25 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She also receives free representation from Sportscasters Talent Agency of America for a year,” the SC Times reported.

Emmer transferred from University of Hawaii-Hilo after one semester and has been a mass communications major at SCSU ever since.

She has worked as on-air talent on Husky Productions broadcasts of SCSU men’s hockey games for the last two seasons, the studio host for games in 2016-17 and was the ice side reporter in 2017-18.

“Katie is one of the hardest working students we’ve had come through the program.  saw that we had something special in her. Once I got to see her work ethic and got to know her as a friend, I continue to say that the sky is the limit for her. For her to win this award, it validates me in what I saw in her three years ago,” said Brian Stanley, Husky Productions’ executive producer.

Emmer has officially graduated from SCSU but is still taking online classes while looking for first full-time sports broadcasting job.
