Friday Scoop: President Trump, Taiwan and Missouri

Here’s your Morning Scoop.

It’s Friday, May 17, 2019 and Iran, Taiwan and Missouri are in the headlines this morning. Here’s what you need to know.

Conflict in Iran: President Trump is cautiously approaching the conflict that the US is currently facing with Iran. On Wednesday, the President said in a tweet “I’m sure Iran will want to talk soon.” The President’s tone shows he is apt to negotiation rather than war despite his top advisors taking a more aggressive stance.  

More Abortion Bills. Missouri is expected to follow Alabama’s bill banning abortion with a bill of their own. If passed, Missouri’s bill will ban abortions at 8 weeks of pregnancy. The ban would include exceptions for medical emergencies, but not for pregnancies caused by rape or incest. For violating the ban, doctors would face five to 15 years in prison. Women who receive abortions would not be prosecuted, AP reports.

The First.  Two years ago same sex-marriage in Taiwan was unconstitutional. Today, a bill was passed legalizing it. With this legislation Taiwan becomes the first place in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage, CNN reports. Taiwan’s President, Tsai Ing-wen, tweeted “On May 17th, 2019 in Taiwan, love won. We took a big step towards true equality, and made Taiwan a better country.”
