From Advocating Civil Rights to… Making America Great Again?
40-year-old rapper Kanye West took to Twitter upon his return from his social media hiatus earlier this week, but fans are displeased, to say the least.
Kanye left fans disgruntled after posting a string of unusual tweets, beginning with “I love how Candace Owens thinks.” Many fans were disheartened to find that Candace Owens, often compared to the likes of Tomi Lahren, is a staunch supporter of Donald Trump who publicly discredits the Black Lives Matter movement as illegitimate and denies that racism exists in our society today. Many followers wonder whether Owens decided that racism was over before or after her and her family won a racial discrimination lawsuit for $37,500 from the Stamford, Conn. Board of Education. To Kanye’s tweet, Owens replied that she “needs [Kanye] to help wake up the black community.”
The days following this interaction brought on a slew of tweets from West in support of Donald Trump and the Make America Great Again movement including a photo of Kanye’s autographed MAGA hat. Is this what happens when the president is more of a celebrity than he is presidential?
Amongst some of Kanye’s most refuted recent tweets, Twitter users found one particularly more hypocritical than the rest.
Lifelong Mr. West fans feel betrayed, for the “black power,” fight-the-system, “Jesus Walks”-type rapper they once listened to appears to be switching his script. The most prominent question being posed is, just how does the Make America Great Again Movement show empathy to the people that Kanye gave a voice to – minorities?
Trump responded to Kanye’s support by saying that he is “doing a service to the black community.” Twitter users have been comparing the rapper’s actions to that of a person “in the sunken place,” comparing Mr. West to Chris Washington, the main character in the Jordan Peele film Get Out. Fans, friends, and family of Kanye have expressed their concern and suggested that he “take it down a notch.”
Only time can tell how many fans and followers Kanye West will lose as Trump continues to showcase the rapper’s support to fuel his “I’m not racist, I have black friends” narrative.
