Hub by Amazon: A New Delivery System

On Tuesday, June 19, Amazon released its latest program: Amazon Hub, a delivery solution for residents of apartment buildings and condominiums. The container allows storage of packages that can later be picked up by it’s owner. Last year, when Amazon Key was released, the program was created for Prime members allowing packages to be dropped off inside homes and cars, when customers were not around.

Amazon customers have the option to use Hub, and there is no additional fee for residents. The new tool also allows deliveries from “any sender,” not just Amazon. The machine is designed to give those who live in an apartment a secure place to receive packages, especially if they don’t have a doorman. It’s also useful for leaving hallways and package rooms clear. The Hub, takes the shape of a traditional locker. “Thousands” more locations will gain access to Hub each month, Amazon says; starting this week, the company is allowing building managers to submit requests for installations.

Here’s how it works: 

  1. A delivery is sent to the shoppers’ usual address
  2. At the time of arrival, the recipient gets a code send via email or text
  3. When ready to pick up a package, residents can enter the code into the HUB machine, and a door opens to reveal the package.

Building on Amazon’s expertise in locker solutions, the Hub addresses frustrations from property owners, carriers, and residents concerning package delivery,” Patrick Supanc, director of Amazon Worldwide Lockers and Pickup, said in a statement. “Now half a million residents in some of the premier properties in the country have access to the Hub, Amazon’s latest delivery solution. The Hub simplifies delivery for residents, offering quick and secure access to packages, day or night. For delivery providers, it offers a single, convenient location for package drop-off and gives property managers time and resources back to focus on other priorities.”
