Juneteenth 2018
Today is June 19, 2018. To many, that date means nothing but to a lot of black Americans, it has a lot of meaning.
Today is the day that Texas freed their slaves in 1865. Texas was the last state to adhere to the Emancipation Proclamation.
153 years later, this day is celebrated in many different ways across the country.
There are parades, church services, readings of famous black authors like Maya Angelou, street fairs and block parties.
There are also bar crawls at black owned bars and clubs. There are also festivals, featuring both music and food. These festivals are used to showcase both well known and unknown artists and restaurants. It is a day filled with fun, laughter and remembrance.
This day is used to celebrate how far black Americans have come and celebrating all our ancestors sacrificed.
Juneteenth is a special day and should always be celebrated as such!
