Lana Del Rey Gets ‘Bitchy’ in Venice

Lana Del Rey surprised fans this week with the release of a new single and music video, “Venice Bitch.” The news comes just as Del Rey announced the name of her forthcoming, full-length album will be “Norman Fucking Rockwell.” The album will be released next year.

The record is a follow-up to her previous release, “Lust for Life,” and was announced on Beats 1 Radio in an interview with Zane Lowe. The project, which will Del Rey’s sixth studio album, has no firm release date yet.

The single, with a duration of nearly 10 minutes, was produced by Jack Antonoff, who also worked with Del Rey on the romantic and guitar infused single “Mariners Apartment Complex,” which came out earlier this month.

“Venic Bitch,” is a fusion of vintage electric guitar, airy strings and an overall soft rock feel.

Del Rey sings about an “American-made” love as summer comes to a close: “You’re in the yard / I light the fire and as the summer fades away / nothing gold can stay.”

Later, she sings, “you write, I tour, we make it work / you’re beautiful and I’m insane / we’re American made.”

When discussing her creative process, Del Rey said, “I like to put stuff out when I’m almost done.” She then went on to say, “but yeah I also love, love September. I selfishly wanted to put out a couple of cute songs.”

The music video for “Venice,” directed by Del Rey’s sister Chuck Grant, has the feel of a home movie. It showcases the singer as playful, carefree and adventurous. It also includes shots of her frolicking by the beach, cruising down the long highways of Los Angeles and being pulled over by the cops.

In the Beats 1 interview, she also discussed debating with her managers about the duration of “Venice.” When they asked her about cutting it to three minutes, she said, “No, end of summer, some people just wanna drive around for 10 minutes and get lost in electric guitars.”
