Meet the Writer: Lizzie Goodfriend
Editor’s note: As part of CMN’s music journalism program, our music writers are profiling other team members, asking about how they got into music and what they see themselves doing in the future. You can read all the profiles here.
Recently, I interviewed Lizzie Goodfriend, a fellow writer here at the College Media Network. I asked her multiple questions, ranging from how music has impacted her life to musical interests.
KA: How did you get into music?
Lizzie: My mom has always been a passionate music lover so I grew up with classic rock playing in our house all the time but I got into music when I joined the band at my junior high. That gave me a deeper appreciation for music, I think.
KA: What’s your first musical memory that you remember?
Lizzie: My first musical memory is probably listening to The Beatles Greatest Hits, Willie Nelson’s Greatest Hits, Elvis’ Greatest Hits and the Monkees Greatest Hits on my family’s multi-day roadtrip to the northeast, to visit my mom’s side of the family. There’s probably something before, this but this is what sticks out in my mind from when I was like four or five.
KA: What do you do with music now?
Lizzie: I save up most of money to spend on attending concerts but I also voluntarily take photographs of concerts for an online publication. I also went to school to get a degree that would help get me into the music industry in the digital marketing sector.
KA: What are several of your favorite music genres?
Lizzie: Classic Rock, Alt Pop, Alt Rock, Indie Pop.
KA: What’s the first musical artist/band that you discovered and liked for yourself?
Lizzie: Ok so mine will probably sound cliché, but I can’t really remember anything before this time even though there probably is one but junior year of high school I found out about One Direction.
I had heard about them here and there on Twitter but never paid them any attention, but then on a band trip to Corpus Christi in our hotel room, we had a music video channel on and the “What Makes You Beautiful” video was on and I got a glimpse of it and it sucked me in.
Like I said I’m sure that’s not my first discovery but it’s the one that is coming to me right now and probably the most prominent and really set off my music journey.
KA: What’s your favorite music video, if you have one?
Lizzie: Oh, that’s a good question. I’m not as into music videos as I am into the music but I do love the “Bohemian Rhapsody” music video. I just think for the time the silhouette idea was amazing.
KA: What are five of your favorite songs?
Lizzie: The Chain by Fleetwood Mac, Guns for Hands by Twenty One Pilots, Woman by Harry Styles, Fireproof by One Direction, The Gold by Manchester Orchestra.
