Here’s Your Morning Scoop.
It’s Monday, May 20, 2019 and the EPA, India and Morehouse College are making headlines. Here’s what you need to know.
Morehouse College investor Robert F. Smith announced during his commencement speech Thursday that he would pay off the student loan debt of the graduating class. CNN reports, “‘On behalf of the eight generations of my family who have been in this country, we’re going to put a little fuel in your bus,’ he told the newly minted graduates in Atlanta before saying his family was creating a grant to eliminate their student loans.” Smith’s promise will pay for 396 students with the combined cost adding up to around $40 billion.
The world’s biggest election came to an end on Sunday, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is slated to win a second term according to exit polls. The number of voters was estimated to be around 900 million. Results will be declared on May 23rd, CNN reports.
The Environmental Protection Agency is leaving it up to the states. According to the Associated Press, the EPA’s decision to give states more control over environmental and public health issues roots itself in the idea that local officials know how to best deal with their own problems.
