Monday Scoop: Virginia Beach, Conversion Therapy and Illinois

Here’s your Morning Scoop.

It’s Monday, June 3rd, 2019. Virginia Beach, Conversion Therapy and Illinois are in the news this morning. Here’s what you need to know:

An employee opened fire in a municipal building in Virginia Beach Friday afternoon, killing 12 people and injuring four. CNN reports, “The shooter, a public utilities worker, died after a long, moving gunfight with officers, Police Chief James Cervera told reporters.” Four people were in surgery Friday night with three people in critical condition and one in fair condition. The shooting suspect has been identified as DeWayne Craddock.

Colorado on Friday, May 31 became the 18th state in the country to ban conversion therapy for LGBTQIA+ minors under the age of 18 years old after Governor Jared Polis signed the bill into law. Governor Polis, who is openly gay, also approved a separate bill into law that allows transgender or gender queer individuals to change their own birth certificate to reflect their gender identity without having to prove they surgically changed their gender or submit a public notice to the state government. 

Illinois on Friday, May 31 became the 11th state in the United States to legalize cannabis or marijuana after the state legislature passed a bill legally permitting the regulated distribution and usage of the substance. Governor J.B. Pritzker is expected to sign it in the state capital city of Springfield. The bill will allow legal adults who are 21 years old or older to possess and use marijuana recreationally starting next year in 2020.
