Nancy Pelosi Elected Speaker of the House
Democrats continued to control the House on Thursday by electing Nancy Pelosi who returned to be the first woman to hold the title. She started to state to defy Trump and pass bills that would open government agencies over Trump’s insistence to fund a border wall. She also suggested that he can be indicted.
After Trump stole the spotlight from the Democrats where he demanded a wall on the border of Mexico in the White House briefing room, Pelosi stated that she will give not more than a dollar to fundit. (Probably as a joke.)
Pelosi stated, ““Our nation is at a historic moment,” she declared. “I pledge that this Congress will be transparent, bipartisan and unifying, that we will seek to reach across the aisle in this country, and across divisions across our nation.”
According to the New York Times, ““We’re not doing a wall,” Ms. Pelosi said sternly outside the House chamber. “Does anybody have any doubt that we’re not doing a wall? So that’s that.” As a response to Trump.
After being sworn in, Pelosi invited the children and grandchildren of representatives on the floor of the House to surround her as she took the oath of office, becoming the first person since Representative Sam Rayburn more than 60 years ago to reclaim the speakership after losing it.
“I now call the House to order on behalf of all of America’s children,” Ms. Pelosi said after she was sworn in.
The scene was strikingly different on the other side of the chamber, where some Democrats wore the traditional clothing of their communities — a Palestinian thobe, a Muslim hijab or head scarf, a Pueblo dress. It was a visual change in a chamber that has for centuries been overwhelmingly white and male.
