Nassar Receives Third and Final Prison Sentence
Former Michigan State and US Olympics doctor Larry Nassar had his final day in court today, appearing in an Eaton County, MI hearing at which he was sentenced to a minimum of 40 years and a maximum of 125 years for crimes in Eaton County. He had been a doctor at the youth gymnastics club Twistars, which is located in Eaton County.
He had previously been sentenced to 60 years in federal prison on child pornography charges and up to 175 years in state prison by Judge Rosemarie Aquilina.
The 54-year-old Nassar will first serve the 60 years of federal time, then begin the state sentence. The earliest he could possibly be eligible for parole would be in 2117, when he would be nearly 155-years-old.
Nassar read a brief statement at today’s hearing:
“The words expressed by everyone that has spoken including the parents have impacted me to my innermost soul. With that being said, I understand and acknowledge that it pales in comparison to the pain, trauma and emotions you all feel.”
Judge Janice Cunningham said the sentence was meant to ensure Nassar never endangered another person again and act as a deterrent to those who would use their power to abuse those they are entrusted with caring for. She thanked all the victims who offered statements during the last two hearings, which were often dramatic and heart wrenching.
In total, 2014 women and girls provided victim impact statements in court, all of which were directed at Nassar.
The focus of the case will now turn to Michigan State University — where former president Lou Anna Simon and former athletic director Mark Hollis resigned in the wake of the sentencing — and USA Gymnastics.
