Netflix Cancels ‘Kimmy Schmidt’

Kimmy Schmidt, a beloved character and Netflix original, will be cancelled after four seasons. According to Deadline, “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt follows Kimmy Schmidt (Kemper) as she continues to adjust to the 21st century and learn more about who she really is. Joining Kimmy on her journey are her best friend and roommate, Titus Andromedon (Burgess); her former-employer-turned-friend Jacqueline White (Krakowski); and landlord Lillian Kaushtupper (Kane).”

Even though Kimmy Schmidt was one of Netflix’s most-watched originals when it premiered in 2015, Netflix is cancelling the show according to Decider. Team Kimmy says that  “after four seasons and over 50 episodes … everyone felt it was time to end the series.” This may be due to Tiny Fey (the creator of the show) having a musical version of Mean Girls as well as a busy career in TV and film. It may also be due to a shift of interests within Netflix itself.

According to Decider, however, Netflix doesn’t seem as interested in making traditional comedy shows as it was when Kimmy Schmidt debuted in 2015. Netflix has also cancelled other shows besides Kimmy Schmidt including —  Disjointed,  Girlboss, Everything Sucks!, Lady Dynamite, and Haters Back Off   There are less scripted comedies and a wider variety of shows including: more stand-up, late night talk, sit down talk, regular talk shows, global shows, and off network comedies such as Friends, Parks and Recreation, Jane The Virgin, and New Girl. Netflix will be able to experiment more with a larger expanse of forms, but this doesn’t mean that scripted comedies will be done away with entirely; they will just be fewer and further in between.
