New Trump Administration Rule Could Cut Clinic Funding
President Donald Trump, along with most of his administration, has expressed his opposition to abortion. However the administration has taken it a step further, as they are currently reviewing a law that would cut federal funding for abortion clinics and any clinic that refers patients to abortion clinics. This new law would affect the TitleX, which provides health services, such as STD testing, birth control and prenatal care, to low-income people. Although it is against the law for federal funding to go towards abortion practices, many anti-abortion groups have pushed for the complete shut down of all federal funding for these clinics. President Trump has expressed many times he is against abortion and believes it show be illegal. Many pro-choice activists believe this new rule could become a “gag” for doctors since it would prohibit clinic doctors from telling women that abortion is an option. This rule would also affect low-income women of color at higher rates than other women. Planned Parenthood along with other clinics have expressed their disappointment in the new rule and their readiness to fight any new, discriminatory laws introduced. In a statement from Planned Parenthood Federation of America, the group said it would not “stand by while our basic health rights are stripped away.
