Nominations for The 70th Primetime Emmy Awards Have Been Announced
Nominations for the annual 7oth Primetime Emmy Awards have been announced at the Wolf Theater on Thursday morning in Los Angeles. Traditional television networks and modern digital platforms such as Hulu, Netflix, Amazon, HBO, and FX lead the way with their own programs nominated in multiple categories. The ceremony celebrating the primetime television arts and entertainment industry will be hosted by Saturday Night Live’s Michael Che and Colin Jost on Monday, September 17 on NBC.
In the Comedy series categories, the Golden Globe award-winning FX show “Atlanta” dominates the field with five nominations including Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for the show’s creator Donald Glover, Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for Brian Tyree Henry, Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Zazie Beetz, and two nominations for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series.
In the Drama series categories, the critical acclaimed Hulu dystopian “The Handmaid’s Tale” is this year’s reigning program with six major nominations such as Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Elizabeth Moss, three Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series nominations for both co-stars Alexis Bledel, Ann Dowd, and Yvonne Strahovski, Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for Joseph Fiennes, and one Oustanding Writing for a Drama Series nomination.
The Limited Series categories were filled with major nominations for FX’s “The Assisnation of Gianni Versace: An American Crime Story.” Nominations for Outstanding Television Movie offered a wide variety of programming including HBO’s “Paterno” starring Al Pacino and the “Black Mirror” episode “U.S.S. Calister.”
NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” dominated the Variety Sketch and Comedy Series categories with nominations for Alec Baldwin, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, Aidy Bryant, and Kennan Thompson. In the Reality Program categories, LGBTQIA+ representation gained traction with 12 nominations for VH1’s “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and one nomination for Netflix’s reboot of “Queer Eye.”
