North Dakota State University Football Player Wears Socialist Pin at the Trump White House
Jack Albrecht, a North Dakota State University junior undergraduate who plays as an offensive guard for its football team, wore a socialist pin at the White House on Monday, March 4. The university’s team, known as the Bisons, were invited by President Trump after winning the annual NCAA Division I Football Championship Game in January in Frisco, Texas against the Eastern Washington University Eagles.
Albrecht, a computer engineering major from Rolling Meadows, Illinois, is an official member of Red River Valley chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). Red River Valley, where the university resides, is located in northern and western North Dakota near the Minnesota and Canadian borderlines.
As socialism gains in popularity amongst present-day younger generations between the ages of 18 years old and 35 years old, Trump and the majority of the Republican Party have been using the term as well as recent progressive policy proposals such as Medicare for All, progressive taxation and the Green New Deal as a scare tactic against the Democrats, especially in the upcoming 2020 elections.
