Winfrey will join Abrams, the Democratic nominee for governor of Georgia, on Thursday, Nov. 1. According to Abrams’ campaign site, town hall meetings are set for Thursday in Marietta and Decatur, GA where she will discuss the value of women in leadership. Aside from the meetings, Winfrey will knock on doors to encourage eligible voters to hit the polls as Nov. 6 approaches and the last few days of early voting come to a close.
The state of Georgia is under scrutiny due to allegations of voter suppression. Abrams even accused her Republican opponent, Brian Kemp, of creating a fearful atmosphere for voters during a debate last week.
Polls predict Abrams and Kemp are neck and neck with the possibility of a runoff in December. If Abrams is elected, she will be the first black female governor in U.S. history.
Oprah Winfrey is not the only public figure to join Abrams on this historically tight race. Several big names in Democratic politics are rallying behind Abrams in the final stretch of her campaign. Former president, Barack Obama, will campaign for Abrams in Atlanta on Friday, Nov. 2. Other supporters include former vice president, Joe Biden, Sen. Cory Booker, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, and actor Will Ferrell.
