Pitzer College Gym Kicks Men to the Curb
On March 23, Pitzer College closed its gym to males for the afternoon to promote the health and wellbeing of female and non-binary students.
The closure was announced on social media by the gym and Pitzer College Residence Life, and was also advertised on posters on campus. Pitzer’s event was between 2 PM and 5 PM, a generally busy time for the facility.
This followed the University of Manitoba’s decision to create gym hours exclusively for female, trans, and non-binary students. During the closure, male students were permitted to use the Pomona College gym, about 20 minutes away from their campus.
The Claremont Independent, a conservative student newspaper that covers events throughout the campuses of the Claremont Consortium, asked organizers why the event was taking place, and whether males made other genders feel uncomfortable during exercise, but received no response.
There is no current indication of plans for future exclusive gym hours at the college.
