Portugal. The Man Care About More Than Just the Music
It’s no surprise that Portugal. The Man are focusing on yet another notable cause to both their fans and the general public. Their continually generous work and donations has proven that this band cares about more than just the sounds they are creating. Recently, they have been bringing a new focus and message to their sold out shows around the world.
This band is anything but closed off about their personal experiences and the internal struggles they face as both musicians and individuals; this explains why their latest cause hits so close to home.
Portugal. The Man’s most recent campaign revolves around supporting mental health awareness. The campaign is called ‘Keep Oregon Well’ and plans to end any stigma around mental health and behavioral issues.
The members of Portugal. The Man are well aware that this disease affects people from all different backgrounds, including musicians. The members of this indie group, originally from Oregon, recognize that this is a serious problem that needs to be addressed and some of them can personally understand what others may be going through.
Zach Carothers, co-founder and bassist of the band, has opened up about his personal struggles: “We are 100 percent not the poster child for superb mental health.” Carothers also explained to Street Roots the meaning behind the band supporting this campaign: “We’re letting people know: We’re with you! We’re one of you! Everybody’s got something, and we have to look out for each other.”
At their recent shows, there were ‘Keep Oregon Well’ vans and volunteers present to talk to concertgoers about mental health and taking care of themselves. The concert series around this campaign has now ended, but its effect will remain strong and prevalent.
