Prince Philip Hospitalized for Hip Surgery

Buckingham Palace announced today that Prince Philip, 96, has been admitted to the hospital for hip surgery. He missed the time-honored Maundy service on Thursday at St. George’s Chapel, as well as Easter services with the Queen on Sunday, due to “trouble with his hip”. It is unknown at this time whether his ailments also kept him from attending his son Prince Andrew’s ceremonial appointment as the Colonel of the Granadier Guards in March. Prince Andrew inherited the role directly from his father, who had been Colonel of the Granadier Guards since 1975.

Prince Philip “retired from public life” in 2017, and it was implied that he would appear at public events with Queen Elizabeth. He was also hospitalized for an “infection stemming from a pre-existing condition” in June of last year.

However, the Duke of Edinburgh attended Christmas services with his family in December, and was seemingly in good spirits. Let’s hope he recovers well.
