Steam Pipe Explodes in Manhattan

Early Thursday morning, a steam pipe burst in the Flatiron District of Manhattan in New York City. Surrounding blocks were evacuated after the explosion at 6:29 AM, and there were only five reported minor injuries.

According to Fox 5 New York, the pipe was installed in 1932, and the old material sparked concerns of asbestos contamination and other pollutants. Those within two blocks of the explosion were advised to shower and immediately bag their clothing as a precaution.

The explosion impacted subway service in New York City, which services 8.5 million people, including those commuting to work.
