The Colorado Avalanche Continue to Fight Back

Another Cinderella story lives on in NHL hockey this week after the Colorado Avalanche beat the Nashville Predators 2-1, sending their series into game six. The Avalanche are the lowest seed going into the Stanley Cup Playoffs, while the Predators are number one. If the Predators would have won the game Friday night, they would have moved forward to round two, and the Avalanche would have been knocked out. The Avs, however, hung on with some late-game goals, and the impressive efforts of their third-string goalie Andrew “The Hamburgalar” Hammond.

This was only Hammond’s second game all season, and after the Avs’ backup goalie Jonathan Bernier got injured (their main goalie Semyon Varlamov already suffered a season-ending injury) Hammond got his shot. No goals were made the entire first and second periods and Hammond made 44 saves, letting just one goal slip in. Beyond Hammond, the rest of the team fought hard the entire game. Nashville made their first goal at 10:18 in the third period, but then in the last four minutes of the game, Colorado scored twice, with their final goal being at 18:32 of the 20 minute period. These goals were thanks to the efforts of Nathan McKinnon, Gabriel Landeskog, and Sven Andrighetto.

The series will find it’s way back to Denver, Colorado on Sunday, April, 22nd, where the Avalanche will try to win again and send the series to game seven, and the Predators will try to win and move on to the second round. Considering how this series is going so far, anything is possible.
