Track Review: ‘Break Up with Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored’ – Ariana Grande
Released February 8th, 2019, along with the album, “Break Up with Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored” brings something fun to an otherwise somber album. Ariana sings about wanting to be with someone despite them having a significant other and to be honest, she doesn’t care.
The tune is catchy and the lyrics are inspiring — to some girls, anyway.
Overall, the lyrics are pretty simplistic. There’s not much meaning behind the song besides the fact that Ariana wants to get into a taken man’s pants.
No doubt the song is a bop, but it isn’t a heartfelt, meaningful song like most of the songs off of the Thank U, Next album. The track has a bouncy and underground tone with a hint of brass to it. If you listen to “Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored” after reading this, trust me, it’ll make you wanna dance and find a person to kiss.
To be frank, this song brings out the sluttiest side of me and I love it. The electronic tsst and bump of the bass has me dancing all around my room by myself. The lyrics are fun despite being superficial, “Now I wanna know how you taste / Usually don’t give it away (yeah, yeah) / But you know I’m out here thinkin’ bout it.”
The song is definitely sexual, but half of the pop songs out there are nowadays, so it’s something I’m willing to look past. Ariana reportedly used “Break Up with Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored” to replace another song that was sadder, called “reMeMber” because she “thinks it’s funny” and that she “liked the idea of ending a more honest n vulnerable project and with like a punchline.” The whole album was emotional, so it was fun to hear something lighter.
The best part of the song has to be the background vocals, because it really adds fun and flavor and a little bit of a hop to the song. I always love singing the background vocals in a song and these vocals make me want to bounce around.
I appreciate “Break Up with Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored” because it’s a fun song that helps me (and Ariana) forget about the more serious things in life.
