Two Syracuse Fraternity Students Accept Their Punishment

Early last month two videos surfaced of members of the Theta Tau Fraternity at Syracuse University in NY, engaging in some pretty disturbing behavior. They were shouting slurs against many marginalized people. Kevin Syverud, the Chancellor at Syracuse, called their comments “racist, anti-Semitic, homophobic, sexist, and hostile to people with disabilities.”

In the leaked video, the fraternity forced new members to pledge hatred against people of color while using derogatory terms for each race. These types of comments violated a slew of university policies, which is what the 18 students in the video were charged with.

Of that 18, two have already received and accepted their punishment, which the university has not released. That information will be released after the completion of the hearings of the other 16 offenders.

The punishments we do know of is the removal of all the students from campus, the removal of the fraternity chapter, the inability of these students to participate in commencement, the expulsion, and removal of academic participation.

This story is still developing as there are still many open-ended questions left unanswered. The hearings for the other 16 students involved has no end date and the university’s ultimate decision is yet to be determined or told to the public.
