US to Limit Visas For Chinese Tech Students

On Tuesday, The Trump Administration announced plans to shorten the length of validity for some visas issued to Chinese citizens, while President Donald Trump works to counter alleged theft of U.S. intellectual property by Beijing.

This growing debacle between Trump’s administration and China is seriously going to impact on Chinese students traveling abroad for their studies.

The AP reported, that officials would limit visas to one year for any student studying in tech-related fields like aviation, high-tech manufacturing, and robotics. While the exact aim isn’t clear, those fields line up with the Made in China 2025 plan — this would discourage students from earning degrees in the US solely to give China a technological edge.

The changes begin June 11. The State Department said that under the new policy, U.S. consular officers may limit how long visas are valid, rather than the usual practice of issuing them for the maximum possible length, The application process, however, did not change.
