Utah Congressman Creates an Anti-Socialism Caucus in Congress
Utah Congressman Chris D. Steward creates an Anti-Socialist Caucus in the U.S. Congress to counter to the rise of leftist politics nationwide. The former U.S. Air Force major and author, whose congressional district includes portions of Salt Lake City and rural southern as well as western regions of the state, believes that his newly formed caucus will highlight criticism and concerns regarding the leftist sociopolitical ideology.
In a February 15 official statement, Stewart says,
“Our adversaries have one thing in common: they want to destroy freedom, democracy and the rule of law, for the life-affirming principles which define our liberal democracy represent an existential threat to their existence. How can President Putin justify his despotic hold on power when his people can look West and see that our democracy has given people freedom and opportunity? How can President Xi justify the repression of his own people if they are able to see our example and want the same thing? The Anti-Socialism Caucus will play a part in how we will defeat socialism once again.”
This is not the first time the majority of the Republican Party has gone after socialism. During his 2019 State of the Union address, U.S. President Donald Trump said that America “will never be a socialist country” with a standing ovation from the majority of Congressional Republicans and some Congressional Democrats in response to the crisis in Venezuela as well as the rise of socialism amongst the public, especially younger people who are more likely to have less money than their own parents and grandparents, more student loan debt, less money for retirement savings, and less likely to buy and own homes and cars.
