Yankees and Red Sox Make Moves Before Trade Deadline
The chess match continues: yesterday the New York Yankees acquired skilled relief pitcher Zach Britton from Baltimore to boost the team’s bullpen as the postseason nears and arms begin to tire out.
Today the Red Sox pulled the trigger on a move of their own, trading for Nathan Eovaldi from the Tampa Bay Rays for minor league pitcher Jalen Beeks, who in one major league start for Boston gave up nine runs.
Eovaldi is a right handed starting pitcher who will most likely be used in the bullpen at first, as the Red Sox starting rotation is among the best in the league. His current earned run average almost mirrors his career average at a cringe-worthy 4.26, but with 53 strikeouts in 57 innings, Eovaldi could provide some much needed depth in the bullpen for the Sox, who have World Series aspirations.
Currently, the Red Sox Sit five games ahead of the Yankees in the AL East, with a home series in Boston coming up in just under a week. Eovaldi will surely be activated by then, and after spending the 2015 season on the Yankee roster, the new Red Sox pitcher will not be shy about diving into the old and cherished baseball rivalry.
