Batwoman Series Is in Development at CW, Featuring a Lesbian Superhero Lead

The CW has announced Tuesday that a Batwoman series is in the works for 2019 making the series the first live-action superhero show with an openly gay lead.

According to Deadline, The CW has ordered to a have script development deal with the former executive producer of “The Vampire Diaries” and “Smallville” writer Caroline Dries and the creator of CW’s “Arrowverse” Greg Berlanti for the series. CW is also looking to cast a lesbian actress, with an age range between 25 to 29 for the role of Batwoman.

Before headlining her own series, Batwoman aka Kate Kane will be introduced in the fall’s four-way crossover event between “Arrow,” “The Flash,” “Supergirl,” and “Legends of Tomorrow” in December.

The logline for the series released by CW reads: “Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope. Based on the characters from DC.”

Batwoman was first introduced by Detective Comics #233 in 1956 and would usually have Batgirl as her sidekick, but in 2006 the character was reintroduced in the DC comics universe as a lesbian and of Jewish descent.

“This is the first time ever that Batwoman will make a live-action appearance on any screen,”  CW president Mark Pedowitz said to Deadline ,and also added this will be the first time Gotham City will be introduced in the “Arrowverse.”
