Clemson Student Arrested for Filing False Rape Claim

Police in South Carolina arrested a Clemson University student Wednesday for filing a false report claiming she was raped at an off-campus fraternity house in January.

The Independent Mail identified the student as 18-year-old Sarah Katherine Campbell and she was at the center of a sexual assault claim that was filed with Clemson University Police in the early hours of Jan. 27 and took place at the Delta Chi fraternity house.

Officials interviewed Campbell, the reported victim of the assault, and began an investigation. No other person was charged or identified in the case.

After determining that the sexual encounter between Campbell and the accused was consensual, police found that “Campbell had not been truthful in the information that she provided,” according to information released by the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office.

Campbell was released on a $5,000 bond Wednesday afternoon.

The Independent reported that they were able to reach Campbell by phone and she maintains her innocence, telling the paper that “I’m a victim of sexual assault. This story is being blown out of proportion, and that’s all I can say.”

All fraternity activities had been shut down while the investigation was underway.
