Demi Lovato has long been an an advocate for mental health issues. She has been sober for six years, and has since openly voiced her own experiences dealing with bipolar disorder, self-harm, bulimia and substance abuse.

Her mother, Dianna De La Garza, has also struggled with the same issues. On Friday, the two were featured on Good Morning America to promote De La Garza’s new memoir, “Falling with Wings: A Mother’s Story.”

“I know it’s something that’s not easy, first-hand being somebody that’s struggled with mental illness and being open and talking about it: I know that it’s not easy to be open with the world,” Lovato said to GMA.

On the show, De La Garza said that Lovato inspired her to get help and and write her book.

“Demi’s the one that gave me courage — because she was being so open and honest and vocal about her struggles, and I saw how much it was helping people everywhere,” De La Garza said.

Lovato is on the April cover of InStyle Magazine, who interviewed Lovato about speaking up.

“I grew up in the era of really, really skinny celebrities. That was the look. And it was cool to be seen partying. Drugs were glamorized, and when I was 12 or 13, nobody [I looked up to] was talking about mental illness,” she told InStsyle. “Nobody was talking about eating disorders. Nobody was talking about cutting. I wanted somebody for my little sister to look up to. I took on that role because I knew it was important.”
