DU Pioneers Hockey Coach Named New Dallas Stars Head Coach

After a highly successful five years as the head coach of The University of Denver Pioneers hockey team, coach Jim Montgomery has been named the new head coach for the NHL team the Dallas Stars. During his time as head coach of the Pioneers, Montgomery led them to a 125-57-26 record and a national championship in 2017. Under his guidance, they also became the third-most winningest program in college hockey and the most winningest in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference. Montgomery also reached 100 wins faster than any coach in the program’s entire history.

The Dallas Stars are in need of a shakeup after multiple subpar seasons. In the last ten years the stars have only made it to the playoffs twice, and only made it to the second round one of those two times. They also have had five head coaches during the last ten years. With Montgomery being hired by the stars, he will be only the fifth coach in hockey history to go straight from NCAA hockey to the NHL. Montgomery also turned down a job with the Florida Panthers last summer, saying that he was very happy in Denver.

What the future will hold for The University of Denver’s hockey team and The Dallas Stars is yet to be seen, but Montgomery’s historic transition from the NCAA to the NHL will definitely have an impact on both team’s upcoming hockey seasons.
