Meet the Artist: Blair Monique

Jennifer Dixon: I am so honored to interview Blair Monique. To start, can you tell us what age you started singing and little bit about where your love for music began?

Blair Monique: I started singing when I was about 2 years old. They tell me my grandfather was playing a record and I took a wooden spoon, stood on a table and went for it singing “somewhere out there” lol. Did she say lol? I loved listening to classic music, vinyl records… I fell in love with every style. I knew then what I wanted to do.

JD: What a great story Blair. I can only imagine how beautiful your voice sounds at 2, which leads me to my next question. If you had to pick, what artist would you say inspired your career the most and why?

BM: I would have to say Kim Burrell. When I heard her music for the first time, I knew I had to do this thing called music for real. She made it ok to be different (for me) and express your art the way I wanted to.

JD: Wow… she has impacted your life in a major way. I am curious to know if you had a chance to meet her and tell her how much she means to you?

BM: I have met her… we didn’t talk much but I have met her. But no, I didn’t tell her. 🙁

JD: Well, maybe you will someday. I think she will appreciate it so much. Can you describe the moment when you knew that you wanted to sing professionally?

BM: I guess I kinda answered that in question 1 lol maybe I’m prophetic. 🙂

JD: Maybe it’s true. So, you recently released your newest single, “Miracles Can Happen.” Can you tell me the inspiration behind the song and what is the message you want people to know?

BM: My miracle story is my inspiration. God did this crazy thing for me that seemed impossible. The best way I knew to express my gratitude was through my music.

JD:  Well said. Your story is beyond powerful. It reassures me that God hears my prayers and He still does work miracles. What artist(s) would you like to collaborate with in the future?

BM: I’d love to collaborate with Jonathan McReynolds. I think he’s innovative and free in his approach to art. That would be super cool.

JD: That sounds absolutely amazing. I am hopeful that it will happen soon. What is the best advice that you would give to those trying to break in the music industry?

BM: Hmmm, well….learn the business before you ever step into a booth. Save yourself years of disappointment and heartache by gaining knowledge.

JD: I must say that you just gave some wonderful advice. There’s nothing wrong with educating yourself. Before I wrap up this interview, I just have to ask you this question. What is something that you want others to know about Blair Monique?

BM: I think I want people to know and remember that I loved people. That no matter the wrong turns I made, that my intention was to always be pure…. in my art and character.

JD: I love that answer. Thank you, Blair. I appreciate you setting time aside to speak with me. It was an absolute pleasure. Your future is shining so bright. Keep inspiring and continue to make a difference in people’s lives.
