‘My Naked Truth’ is the Next Powerful Photo Journal to hit the Shelves

“My naked truth is that I am lost, I am found, and I am ever changing. What is yours?”

On Sept. 25, 2018, photographer, actor, writer, producer, activist and cook Adrien Finkel added another title to her name: storyteller. Armed with a camera and magic marker, Finkel set out to finish what started as a simple project in 2011, a project that now resonates with hundreds of people in the form of a book.

In the newly published photo book “My Naked Truth,” Finkel blurs the line between writing and photography by creating a photo journal that captures raw mantras and advice given by people from all over.

Each photo is of an individual with little to no clothes on and a “naked truth” written across his/her body in marker. These truths range from inspirational quotes to painful secrets. Throughout the journal, Finkel captures countless inspirational, heart-wrenching mantras of strangers.

“I shot the photos that are in the book in both Los Angeles and New York City,” Finkel said. “I learned so much over the course of this project, honestly each person that I have met with has taught me something.”

Finkel believes words can change people. She that quotes tend to stick with people and she finds inspirational phrases everywhere — in books, poems, magazines and even conversations.

“What catapulted this project was a simple post I wrote on Facebook asking friends and family for words and pieces of advice that get them through hard days,” she said. “The comments and messages poured in. It was overwhelming. I knew there was more work to be done after that.”

Finkel believes that the words people need to hear will change as people develop.

“In my early twenties, I clung onto words that revolved around being lost, as well as unrequited love. Now, at thirty-three, the words I seek tend to deal with female empowerment and celebrating my most authentic self.” Finkel says she is currently living by the phrase “You deserve all the love you give to others.”

Through all of this confidence, she still finds herself seeking approval at home and at work. “I have never felt more myself these days, but within that truth I have so many contradicting feelings, wants, and needs.”

In regards to Finkel’s “naked truth,” she currently revolves around the concept of authenticity. “If I was to look at what ‘My Naked Truth’ did for me as a whole, it taught me that there was value in being able to listen,” Finkel said. “That there was value in lending an open ear and an open heart with no judgment. Even if I had no other skills beyond that, what I was doing was enough to feel proud.”

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for hope or lost for words. Let Finkel’s journal of diverse mantras fill you with inspiration and confidence.
