New Twitter Strategy Targets Abusive Behavior

Twitter Chief Executive Jack Dorsey announced Tuesday that the company will be adopting a new method of tracking abusive behavior on the platform, according to Reuters. Although Twitter already has many guidelines in place that prevent harassment, Dorsey explained that Twitter’s moderators will now be filtering tweets that display any abuse, making them appear less frequently in the feed.

While these tweets will not be fully removed from the platform, Dorsey shared with Reuters that the goal is to reduce the burden from those that are receiving abuse. The new strategy will come with a few noticeable changes to Twitter, as the company explores ways to make tweets more civil.

Abusive accounts, according to Dorsey, will be monitored by how often they tweet to someone who does not follow them, whether they have confirmed their email address, and if their language is appropriate. In tests, the company found that this method decreases abusive tweets by eight percent.
