New York College Freshman Targeted in Brutal Slaying

Over the weekend, a Binghamton University freshman was stabbed to death. The victim, Joao Souza was attacked at about 10:30 p.m. on Sunday in a residence suite on the campus near the Pennsylvania state line.

With the attacker at large most of Monday, the surveillance footage from the dorm, Windham Hall, showed a man in dark pants and a dark hooded sweatshirt.

Binghamton University officials said they believe the video captured student Michael M. Roque, 20, who was arrested on second-degree murder charges in the stabbing death of engineering student Joao Souza.

According to NBC New York, “Law enforcement believes the attack was not a random act and that the victim was targeted,” university Vice President Brian Rose said.

This isn’t the first student death of the year, making this story all the more chilling for college students. On March 9th, the body of Haley Anderson, of Westbury on Long Island, was found in the off-campus apartment of a fellow student she had briefly dated. She had been strangled.
