Penn. Bill Seeks to Ban Sales of Puppy Mill Pets

Sen. Guy Reschenthaler and state Rep. Jason Ortitay of Pennsylvania are preparing legislation that would make it illegal for pet stores to sell puppy mill pets. Dogs, cats and other pets sold at stores like Pet Smart would be required to come from rescue shelters.

According to Lancaster Online, the Humane Society of the United States included seven Pennsylvania dog-breeding facilities on a list of the 100 worst mills in the U.S.

“It is well-documented that ‘puppy mills,’ inhumane commercial dog breeding facilities, frequently supply pet stores with puppies,” Ortitay wrote in a message seeking co-sponsors on the official Pennsylvania House website. “Consumers often spend thousands of dollars caring for sick puppies from pet stores, in some cases, only to suffer the heartbreak of their new pet dying.”

Private breeders who follow responsible practices would not be affected under the new law.

One county in Florida recently passed a similar law.
