Segway Announces New $400 Roller Shoes

On June 28, Segway Inc. released a video debuting their new self-balancing roller shoes. The catch? They’re starting at $399.

The Segway Drift W1’s combine the ease of classic roller skates with the new-age technology of a hoverboard, allowing easier balance without sacrificing speed. With each shoe weighing nearly 8 lbs, riders are anchored to the ground, creating a lower center of gravity that promotes balance.

The shoes run on battery like an electronic, with one charge lasting about 45 minutes. They can reach speeds up to 7.5 mph.

Segway describes the shoes as “lightweight and small for easy portability”, marketing them as an alternative method of transportation for daily life.

The Segway Drift W1’s are currently available for pre-order, for a deposit of $99. All pre-orders will be shipped with a complimentary helmet. Segway plans to start shipping orders out in August 2018.
