Track Review: Jana Horn’s “Go on / Move Your Body”

Jana Horn’s “Go On / Move Your Body” is a track built from the fondness of a distant memory. The slow tempo and simple melody  tiptoe  around the lyrics creating images of warm colors and fall weather.

Throughout the song she sings slowly as if she’s begging you to savor the moment while your in it, an affect that is seldom considered in today’s fast paced world.

The song was released last month but conjures up intense nostalgia for ’90s romcoms like Sleepless in Seattle and Notting Hill. The lines “nothing compares to a thing in memory” and “nothing compares to a thing already done,” are standouts in the song and provide context to the otherwise abstract preceding lyrics.

On first listen, I expected a more substantial bridge to provide a richer climax to the story in Horn’s lyrics. However, after multiple listens, I concluded that bridge isn’t needed, because like a fading memory, the climax isn’t always reached.

Horn has an authentic indie folk sound that, if further developed, could launch her into the realm of indie-folk giants The Lumineers. The Texas-based musician’s debut album, Optimism, is expected to be released later this year.
