Friday Scoop: Storming the Elections

Welcome to the Morning Scoop for August 10, 2018. There are a lot of things Michael Avenatti has in common with President Trump: a wild Twitter feed, an outspoken television personality, and some outlandish views. But everyone is aware they couldn’t clash more, which could make the 2020 race all the more exciting.

If we want to cover the 2020 race when it comes, we’ll need your help staying afloat. For as little as $2 a month, you can help fund the tiny team (of two) that supports and trains our students. Help us by visiting our Patreon page or donating with Pay Pal. That’s less than your Spotify premium account.

Stormy Daniels’ Lawyer Considering a 2020 Presidency

Famous for defending porn star Stormy Daniels, Michael Avenatti made an appearance Iowa State Fair, telling reporters that he is strongly considering running as a Democrat in the 2020 presidential race.

Avenatti has become one of President Trump’s most outspoken critics since defending Stormy and her fight against Trump and his lawyer, Michael Cohen. He stated that while he does feel strongly about ousting the president, he is “not [running] to get under the president’s skin.”

The infamous lawyer has already made a pointed effort to make himself known to the Democratic Party, protesting Trump in London and visiting children separated from their parents at the U.S. border. He is expected to make yet another appearance in Iowa, and visit Ohio and Florida in the coming weeks.

Saint Louis University is Adding Amazon Echo Dots to Student Housing

It’s officially August, which means schools are preparing for students to return to campus.

Students at Saint Louis University (SLU) will be welcomed by a new addition to their residence halls and apartments. The university announced on Thursday that they will be putting Amazon Echo Dots into each student residence.

The university underwent a 20 room trial and collected student feedback before settling on the Echo Dot. SLU is noted as the first university in the U.S. to bring virtual assistance to every residence on campus, although Arizona State University implemented the Dots in a limited number of rooms last summer.

Parents of First Lady Obtain U.S. Citizenship

Viktor and Amalija Knavs, parents to First Lady Melania Trump, have become U.S. citizens as of yesterday, according to ABC. The pair was sworn in at a federal immigration court in New York City.

Questions arose whether Melania sponsored her parents, but upon being asked, the Knavs’ immigration lawyer reported that they had applied for citizenship on their own. Melania confirmed this information, although it remains unclear what means or program they might have used.

President Trump, however, reported that his wife did sponsor her parent’s green card application, differing from the other public statements.

Today in a Tweet: Wait, There’s a Day for That?

Today is National Lazy Day, and it’s starting to make us feel a little bad for how lazy we actually are when there’s no excuse.

Last But Not Least: Suspect Arrested for Starting California Wildfires

The largest wildfire in California history has swept 667,000 acres of land and evacuated 4,400 residents from their homes. On Wednesday, authorities arrested the man believed to have started the massive fire. According to ABC News, 51-year-old Forrest Clark was charged with two counts of arson for starting the fire that has blazed through Orange County and Riverside. The fire associated with Clark is currently only 5% contained.

This Friday Morning Scoop was made possible by Tamia Heard and the CMN Staff. Today we snoozed our alarm three times, because that’s what summer is all about. Well, that, and being consistently dehydrated. Both are healthy, we swear.
