Monday Scoop: Shutdown Over
The big story…
President Announces Deal to Reopen the Federal Government Until Feb. 15
On Friday, President Trump announced that the federal government would be reopening and back paying the 800,000 federal workers who had missed two paychecks. Funding for a border wall is not included in the temporary deal, which expires on Feb. 15, so Congress and the president have about three weeks to figure out what to do next. Angola Decriminalizes Homosexual Sex and Outlaws LGBTQ Discrimination
The southern-central African country of Angola has decriminalized same-sex relations between LGBTQ individuals and outlawed discrimination against the country’s LGBTQ community on Wednesday, Jan. 23. According to Human Rights Watch, the legislative unicameral National Assembly in Luanda, Angola’s capital city, has decided to repeal a colonial-era law that outlawed homosexual sexual relations since the country was part of Portugal for more than 400 years between 1575 to 1975. Furthermore, new anti-discrimination laws state that if anyone in Angola is refusing to employ or provide services to individuals based on their own sexual orientation, they may face up to two years imprisonment.
