Thursday Morning Scoop: Heading for the Border
Trump Signs Proclamation Sending National Guard to Mexican Border
President Trump signed a proclamation Wednesday that will send National Guard troops to the southwest U.S-Mexico border to aid Border Patrol efforts to impede the entry of illegal immigrants.
He wrote in a memo to administration officials that “situation at the border has now reached a point of crisis.”
The president tweeted on Wednesday morning that the Congress needs to immediately rectify the United States’ “very weak” border laws, asserting his intention to “take strong action today” against the influx of immigrants attempting to illegally cross the border.
Trump has been focusing on the issue in part because the spending bill he signed last month includes only a fraction of the money he needs to build what he calls “a big, beautiful wall” along the U.S. border with Mexico.
Rachel Chan summarized the situation for CMN.

White House Moves to Soothe China Trade War Fears As Stock Markets Freaks Out
White House officials worked Wednesday to calm fears of a potential trade war with China, saying the administration’s tariffs were a good “threat” that will help the U.S. economy. Hours later, China retaliated by saying they would punish American products with similar tariffs.
The New York Times reports, “The administration’s insistence that a trade war was not imminent came as the United States and China traded tit-for-tat penalties that caused wild swings in stock markets from Hong Kong to New York.”
China and the U.S. are locked in a face-off that could disrupt global economic recovery, mess up global supply chains and hurt debt-ridden China even more.

Simpsons fans rejoice!
It’s now possible to purchase the pink sprinkled donut that has long been Homer’s favorite. Krispy Kreme has teamed up with the creators of The Simpsons to make the D’ohnut (inspired by Homer’s catchphrase), a pink glazed donut with rainbow sprinkles that is straight out of the long-running TV show.
The catch, however, is that the D’ohnut is currently only available in Australia. Get more details in Caitlin Wills report for CMN.
